As everyone was resting today (Ella in her crib, Taylor in her bed, and Emmett in our room on our bed) I went in to check on Emmett. I smelled something burning immediately as I entered our bedroom.
Me: Emmett, it smells like something is burning. What's that smell? Is it the fan?
Emmett: No, it's your yight (light). (My reading lamp next to the bed.)
Me: My light? What do you mean? (as I walk over to check out the light) It looks like there's fingernail polish on the light (red splotchy stuff) Emmett, where's the fingernail polish?
Emmett: It's not fingernail polish, it's the puppy! (very sad and emotional)
Me: The puppy? What puppy? What happened?
Emmett: I don't want to tell you! (sad, embarrassed, afraid of getting in trouble, needing a hug)
Me: Emmett sweetie, you won't be in trouble. I just need to know what happened?
Emmett: I don't want to tell you! (crying, emotional, needing lots of hugs)
Me: Emmett buddy, you need to tell me what happened. What happened?
Emmett : (jumping off the bed and digging underneath the bed and pulling out Clifford, the little stuffed puppy they drag around the house everywhere. His face has been burnt off and stuck to the light.)
He tried to explain what happened but is too emotional and too sad. He kept saying, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I have never seen him this remorseful. He is SO sad.
Me: Emmett buddy (giving lots of hugs), it's ok. It's ok. You're not in trouble. I know you're sad about the puppy, but it's ok. We just know we can't put things in the light, it'll burn the puppy or whatever you put in there, and it's dangerous. It could have caused a fire.
Emmett: Mama, you never told me not to put stuff in the light, right? You never told me. Right? (As he's crying and clearly very upset and apologizing.)
Me: No buddy, I never told you not to put stuff in the light. But now we know, that we can't put stuff in the light.
Emmett: Yeah, that's right. You never told me to not put stuff in the light, right?
It was the sweetest, saddest thing I think I've ever heard from Emmett. He was so remorseful and so sad. He told me he wanted me to throw the puppy away when he wasn't watching so he didn't have to think about it. He kept saying he was sorry and trying to be strong and not cry. I hope I remember that moment forever, because I know that his little heart was truly sorry. Such a sweet learning and growing moment.
Emmett needed lots of hugs and love to make up for his sadness. I stayed with him on the bed until he fell asleep.
